Having read a number of super-glowing reviews, I went to see Will Smith's I Am Legend. In the words of Julia Roberts in "Pretty Woman": Big mistake. Huge !
It.Was.Harrowing ! HARROWING.
What appears, at first glance, to be a crowd-pleasing zombie thriller starring Will Smith is actually one of the most difficult movie-going experiences I have ever had. I walked in as a carefree kid looking for a few thrills. I walked out a nervous wreck shadowed by the spectre of her own mortality. Later, once I had recovered from the visceral fear that gripped me long after the credits were over, I realised that the movie has a number of internal inconsistencies that weaken the story if you think about it but, luckily for the filmmakers, the movie is so good at keeping you in a state of extended and acute terror that you have no desire to think. It is a good movie and the performance by Will Smith is great but the whole fear as entertainment thing is not my bag. two stars.
