I lost my financial mind over the holidays. I spent mad amounts of money. Inappropriate amounts. Mostly on restaurant meals and drinks and Christmas gifts. In fact, I went so crazy that today is pay day and after paying all my bills and putting aside my savings, I have literally $140 left to spend for the next two weeks. $10 a day. This covers food and transportation (which will eat up the biggest chunk) but also things like clothing and entertainment (movies, books, nights out with friends).
Obviously, I'm not complaining. I'm out of money because I spent it on fun stuff and, despite poor planning on my part, I can still afford to put aside money for savings. Pretty lucky by any standard. Lucky to have a job and lucky to live in a country where having a job means having money for movies and clothes and Christmas gifts. Perhaps, this financial faux-pas will remind me of my good fortune and encourage me to make good decisions, instead of spending on ephemera.
While I am grateful for all that I have, I still need to buckle down for the next two weeks. During that time, I will:
* Make coffee at home
* Watch movies on TV instead of going to the theatre
* Pre-drink at home and drink club soda at the bar
* Get books from the DC Public Library
* Walk to and from work (unless it's too cold)
* Roll up the spare change in my change jar (I think this will be my saving grace)
Wish me luck.
